Alice Chaucer

Note the left Wrist Garter. Alice Chaucer was appointed Lady of the Garter in 1432 by Henry VI King England, II King France (since Henry was eleven years old at the time the appointment is likely to be by one of his uncles: Regent John Lancaster 1st Duke Bedford or Protector Humphrey Lancaster 1st Duke Gloucester.

The effigy was, apparently, viewed to determine how a lady should wear the garter at the re-commencement of Lady of the Garter appointments in 1901 after a gap of several hundred years.

A particularly fine example of the Cadaver underneath the chest on which Alice’s effigy lies. Full-length in a shroud.
